The "Arca-Swiss Style" Quick-Release Geometry
The "Arca-Swiss Style" Quick-Release Geometry refers to the open-cavity dovetail quick-release system developed decades ago by Arca-Swiss for use with their Monoball ball heads and large format cameras. After the extreme popularity of the Arca-Swiss B-1 ball head in the 1990s, other companies began manufacturing custom camera-body and lens plates using this geometry. Since then, this geometry has become the industry standard for high-end tripod heads (particularly in the nature photography industry). The figure below shows the basic dimensions of the dovetail used in this system:
The Wimberley Head Version II, Sidekick, and other clamps use this quick-release system, so any lens that you wish to connect to our heads must be equipped with an Arca-Swiss style lens plate or replacement foot.
Manufacturers that use the Arca-Swiss Style Quick-Release Geometry include:
Giottos (only on their most recent line of ball heads & plates)
Novoflex (only on some of their products)

|Using our replacement foot on your large lens decreases the overall height of the lens, lowering the center of gravity so that it is easier to achieve proper balance when used on a gimbal head such as the Wimberley Head. When using the Sidekick or Sidemount Wimberley Head, replacement feet are useful and sometimes required for optimal gimbal head performance.|
|The replacement feet are precision machined to slide right into
an Arca-Swiss style quick-release clamp. They also have
holes for mounting to non-quick-release tripod heads and monopods. All replacement feet feature the same safety stops and flash bracket compatibility as our lens plates.
|Lens feet are often a weak link in a lens support system. We use finite element analysis validated by empirical data when we design our feet. This process allows us to reduce weight while maintaining an appropriate level of stiffness. Other manufacturers often reduce weight by removing too much material. This may so drastically reduce the stiffness of the foot that it becomes a weak link (undermining the stiffness of the entire setup).||
