FAQs - What if the threaded hole in the bottom of my Wimberley Head is stripped?

This assumes the helicoil has been stripped out.

Loosen the retaining nut on the top of the tripod, and remove the 3/8-16 stud.  Clean the stud with detergent and water or with solvent.  Roughen and/or deform the top end of the stud.  Clean and roughen the inside of the threaded hole which once held the helicoil.  Thread the stud back into the hole in the top of the tripod head.  Now wax with floor wax, shoe polish or even grease or oil, all surfaces which you do no want to bond.  Finally use an epoxy paste to fasten the bottom of the head to the stud in the top of the tripod head.  Weigh down the head so that the mating surfaces fit well, and let the epoxy set up.

You should then be able to detach the head by unscrewing it from the top of the tripod.  The stud should remain in the head, and unscrew from the tripod.  This is a temporary fix, but may work for you.
